Dr. Tina Parker (DVM '93) and Dr. Michael Parker (DVM 93)


Dr. Tina Parker (DVM 93) and Dr. Michael Parker (DVM 93) are working in Cairo, Egypt.
They both both graduated from Iowa State receiving BS degrees in 1989 and DVM degrees in 1993. Last year they both completed MSc in epidemiology from the University of Iowa and have been working in Cairo Egypt for over a year with the U.S. Navy Medical Research Unit #3.

Dr. Michael Parker is a medical epidemiologist working as the coordinator of surveillance for avian influenza in the Ukraine, Egypt and Kenya.

Dr. Tina Parker works in the Disease Surveillance Program and is currently involved in surveillance for undifferentiated febrile illnesses caused by zoonotic diseases such as brucella, leptospira, salmonella typhi and arboviruses like rickettsial diseases. Other surveillance projects that she is involved in include surveillance of pneumonia in children and nosocomial infections in Egypt and bacterial meningitis surveillance in Syria, Sudan, Yemen, Morocco, Libya and Pakistan.

Recently they were selected to join a team which included representatives from the Egyptian Ministries of Agriculture and Health as well as the World Health Organization assessing the capacity and preparedness for an outbreak of avian influenza in Egypt . Dr. Tina Parker was invited by the WHO to work in the Kingdom of Jordan for a similar assessment of avian influenza preparedness shortly thereafter.

Both are proud to tell people we meet from around the world that we are graduates from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine.
