The Orthopaedic Research Laboratory serves as a resource for the conduct of basic and applied orthopaedic research. Participating faculty members enjoy liberal technical, statistical and computational support. In addition, laboratory space, equipment and funds can be utilized to support orthopaedic research or training. Historically, animal models of human disease, gait analysis and integrating materials into biology have served as the staples by which the Laboratory has leveraged funds and grown in expertise. Currently, major focus areas of investigation include osteonecrosis of the femoral head, the chondroconductive properties of mesenchymal stem cells, and total joint replacement (hip and elbow). Clinical veterinary research projects focus on cranial cruciate ligament disease in the dog (surgical techniques and heritability), management of elbow osteoarthritis (total elbow replacement and humeral condylar unloading) and shock wave therapy for orthopaedic conditions in horses.
