Plasmid Biology
Barbara E. Funnell and Gregory J. Phillips (editors)
2004 ASM Press

Varying widely in form, function, and utility, plasmids are autonomously replicating genetic elements found in cells of nearly all organisms. They affect cells in both problematic and beneficial ways--for example causing resistance to antibiotics, or fixing elemental nitrogen. This text/reference is for researchers as well as advanced undergraduate and graduate courses on microbial genetics and ecology, bacterial pathogenesis, and biotechnology. An opening essay gives a historical perspective of the study of plasmids; and the remaining chapters detail basic biological processes, specific plasmid systems, plasmid evolution, and use of plasmids as genetic tools.
