| Research Interests / Areas of Expertise: Dr. Bender's research interests are in the area of educational innovation using clinical cases, mechanism-based diagnostic reasoning and technology. She also studies and teaches comparative clinical pathology including hematology, chemistry, urinalysis and cytology. Dr. Bender leads a multidisciplinary research team called the Biomedical Informatics Research Group. Other key members of the team have expertise in the areas of instructional design and evaluation, computer science and informatics. BIRG’s work has resulted in the development and implementation of the Diagnostic Pathfinder, an Internet-based case analysis tool that helps students learn diagnostic reasoning skills. To date, BIRG has partnered with six North American colleges of veterinary medicine and received over $1.7 million in educational funding. Improvements in student learning from these partnerships are documented by seven years of research involving more than 2,000 students.
